Solar Panel System Failure

Solar inverter fails within four years!

I haven’t blogged about the the East-west split solar system for some time. As far as I know it had been doing very well and running without problems. This was until last week when I learnt that the SolarEdge inverter had stopped working.

Solar InverterAfter checking the display panel we found that it was showing ‘Error Code 26’ – a faulty AC relay. We checked the manual and it appears that this is caused when the AC relay fails during the wake-up test and that we should contact SolarEdge support.

After a couple of calls to the company that installed the solar panel system we were informed that the inverter would need replacing. We were rather shocked at this news as the system hasn’t even achieved four years use 🙁

Although we were expecting an inverter to last a lot longer than just four years, we were very pleased that the inverter and initial installation was still under warranty. The installation company ordered a replacement and installed the unit within 7-days. It would have cost around eight hundred pounds if the inverter was not within warranty.

I can’t help now thinking about how many inverters we will get through before the systems pay for themselves!

Solar Generation Statistics – December 2012

South, South-East statistics table shows that during the month of December 2012 my Sanyo PV solar array yielded 60.64 kWs of electricity, averaging 1.96 kWs per day.

Best day: 5.46 kW 10/12/2012
Worst day: 0.02 kwh 19/12/2012 🙁
Generation per kwp: 30.32 kW
Daily average: 1.96 kwh

I thought that I had experienced the worst day when I reported a 0.13 yield on the 24/11/2012 – well after a dreadful day’s weather on the 19th December my system generated a mere 0.02 kWs!

This is the last East-West Split statistics table and ends the twelve-month period since installation. I will only be blogging the total monthly yield from now on for this system. The table shows that during the month of December 2012 the 2.64kW SolarEdge PV array yielded 40.69 kWs of electricity, averaging 1.32kWs per day.

September 2012 Solar Panel Generation Statistics

September solar generation – I guessed that this was going to be the month when solar harvesting would start to wind down a little, especially with the autumnal nights now drawing-in in the build-up to winter. Well the days have certainly grown shorter and the nights longer, but I have been quite pleased with the South, South-East’s  generation figures for the month. The first table shows that during the month of September 2012 the 2kW Sanyo solar PV array yielded 207.02kWs, averaging 6.90kWs per day. This is more than what was achieved in June and very close to August’s yield!

Solar Generation Statistics - September 2012This East-West Split statistics table also shows that during the month of September the SolarEdge system array yielded 201.63kWs, averaging 6.72kWs per day. The solar set-up now beginning to suffer a little without the late evening sun!
